WoW Commission

Draenei priest in T6 with Ethereum Life Staff for OFC on LJ.

From pencil to photoshop

I did this painting for a class Saturday after the next where I'll be teaching concept art/digital painting for 3D club.  I know, I know, what I'm doing is 2D stuff, but trust me, you don't want to be designing your character in a 3D program. 3 hours, 30 minutes total.

With my entry:

"Sylvanas stands on a rocky pedestal in New Agamand (post-cataclysm), surrounded by her loyal, reanimated minions with mementos of her past both held in her hand and placed near her feet.

Sylvanas is an icon of success, strength and perseverance from impossible odds, and her story is intertwined with my own family story. In this painting, Sylvanas reflects my parents, who overcame great odds to come to America after being chased away from their homeland. From the strength and support of others, my parents are able to give me the future they never got to have.

Although Sylvanas bears mementos of her past, she recognizes the need to move forward in order to lead her people toward prosperity."

Blizzcon Entry Progress 11

Wow, like 5 hours and didn't get much accomplished at all. -.-

Practice

1 hour concept sketching with color that I really need to do more of. Technique is poo.  Not harsh enough on the colors.  I learned a lot from this actually...Need to use darker darks and lighter lights.

Might of the Forsaken progress 9 (color!)

Bah, I didn't draw yesterday because I was too busy being angry at my other hobby (dolls).  I really hate it when people promise to sell you an item and then sell it to someone else when you were expecting them to tell you exact shipping costs!  Also it was Marissa's birthday yesterday (the 8th)  so we did a lot of chilling.  Look at me use this like a regular journal, hah.  Bah it says I'm posting on the 11th, technically, but this is all the 10th's work!

I kind of put off starting color on this, too, because, well, maybe I'm afraid that it's going to turn out really bad.  90% of the first part of the drawing looks bad, though, and I'd say I'm only about 75% done.  The colors aren't too bad, but it messed up the composition a little bit.  The top right seems so void now--I wonder if I should paint some bigger wind mills because you can't even tell that the background is supposed to be old New Agamand anymore.  I also wonder if I should brighten up part of the sky for contrast, but at the same time, I wanted this painting to be a little dark since it's about the forsaken and undead goodness.

The death knight on the bottom right has been bothering me nonstop because the mage's hand is in this face so he looks cramped.  And I've always hated the undead on the bottom right...he needs to change.  He doesn't seem very menacing.

So the color layer of the painting apparently took something like 3 hours.  I am really sad that I forgot to hit unpause on my recorder because it jumps so much when I started painting Sylvanas, who is the main of this photo.  I didn't forget to hit unpause when Mason asked me to log into his WoW account, though, so you get to see all of that stuff happening. xD

Anyway, here it is, I guess.  Tomorrow I get to start the "paint over" layer, which is my favorite.  However, it's gonna be irritating because I had to merge all of the layers.  Even with 8gb of ram my computer doesn't have enough.  Don't tell me to better allocate the ram in photoshop because I can't deal with it going any slower than it already does. D:  This painting is 8000x9000 pixels at 400 dpi so I'm sure that doesn't help.

Put some Within Temptation in the video for ya. :D

Might of the Forsaken progress 8

Ready to color tomorrow!  Worked 3 hours on it today.  I hope it comes out good. :)  I filled the canvas with black and painted out the black on the bottom.  Not sure if it looks better--I think it might.

Might of the Forsaken progress 7

People were over, but I still got to draw for 2 hours today!  Not bad.  I need one more character on the bottom left, then I'll fill the rest of the empty spots with random undead classes. :)

Banner thingy & Sketch of my Grandparents (dad's side, younger)

Made this bad banner for my signature:

One hour sketch of my grandparents of when they were younger (obviously my grandfather was a lot older than my grandmother xD).

Might of the Forsaken Progress 5 Video Works! :D

Oops, I just realized this should have been titled Progress 5, not 3.  Oh well. :(
It looks a LOT better on facbeook, jeez.

Might of the Forsaken Progress 5

I was really excited about posting videos of my progress today, but iShowU recorded the videos in a strange frame rate that After Effects did not like, so Handbrake is rewriting the FPS so that After Effects can read it tomorrow.

Did a lot of touch ups on the characters' faces and added an undead mage, pudge, and started a banshee.  I think I put in about 4 hours of work today (actually only about 3 hours 30 mins according to videos), but I was also watching a lot of Spider-man and Chinese dramas while drawing. xD  It was a productive day, I think.

I worry about Sylvanas not being the center of attention in this piece, but she'll be fine once I merge all the layers and play with lighting and color.  Right now the pudge is a bit small, and the banshee is a bit big, too. :P

Might of the Forsaken Progress 4, and Video of the Val'kyr

I finished Sylvanas' armor today and added a val'kyr based on the WoW 3D model.  I'll probably redesign the Val'kyr's model a little bit since that 3D model's armor is lol.  I also bought the iShowU program to record the making of the bad Val'kyr!  The video is too big though so I'll make it smaller next time.

Might of the Forsaken Progress 3, and Thrall warm-up

Not much progress today.  I didn't feel so well.  Probably only an hour on it.  I decided to draw the bow Sylvanas was originally designed with.  The legendary in game is too large and distracting in the composition.

For my warm-ups, I'm going to do 45 minutes to 1 hour of something I'm uncomfortable with drawing.  Tomorrow will be a male worgen.

Practice before bed

30-45 minutes before beeed.

Might of the Forsaken Progress 2, and warm-up

That bow is so difficult, and I'm sure the angle/perspective is off, but I'll fix it later.  Sylvanas now has 3 minions!  I also did a portrait practice...I need more practice on those.  I might also draw the other WoW races--I need to.  Perhaps I'll do one for a warm-up tomorrow.
